Nobody likes to have a smile that shows crooked or crowded teeth, everyone wants that perfect celebrity-looking dazzling smile, and that is what orthodontic treatments such as traditional braces are for!
What are the traditional braces?
Traditional braces are the ones that consist of a metallic wire that passes through each bracket (small metallic or ceramic pieces bonded on each tooth) to the bands placed on the posterior (back) teeth. The wire has to be tightened at regular intervals to maintain optimal low and continuous force on teeth.
How long do traditional braces take?
Depending upon the complexity of the treatment, the duration may vary from 12 months to 24 months. Delay in visits, delays the treatment.
Dr. Shoaib Durrani at Durrani’s Dental Clinic ensures and prioritizes the satisfaction of their patients. It is of utmost importance for them to remove the stigma of fear associated with dental visits and provide their patients with the best dental care possible.
What type of braces works fastest?
Impatience is an attribute common to us humans. We are desperate to get results in no time, mostly when they are related to our appearance and aesthetics! But with extraordinary patience comes excellent results!
That being said, in orthodontic treatments, each patient’s teeth and facial profiles are different; hence it is nearly impossible to say which type of braces will work the fastest. But do we even need fast treatment?
The Golden Letter for Orthodontic treatment is S for SLOW & STABLE treatment. This can only be achieved with discipline and patience, especially in the orthodontic treatment world. Anyone who promises fast results is either an amateur or exaggerating.
The main problem with achieving super-fast results is Orthodontic Relapse, which has been proven through wide-spread research. Orthodontic relapse is a situation where, if the treatment has not been planned and executed properly, teeth start to move BACK to their original positions and this can lead to more dental problems.
What is a good age to get braces?
The sooner, the better!
We strongly emphasize getting a proper orthodontic consultation done for your children around 9-11 years of age. We say this because, in certain treatments, the ‘growth phase’ of the patient holds significant importance in the overall treatment planning of their case. Treatments like growth modification, arch expansion, etc are best utilized during the growth spurt.
Usually, an orthodontist may begin the treatment depending on the complexity and patient’s facial profile (this is a growing age, dental problems can get caught early and treated properly).
The right dentist will always be honest with you because while treating the teeth with braces, jawbones and their growth has to be considered too, which depends on the age. Because once the period is passed and the bones are fully developed (usually after the age of 18), then teeth can only be aligned, no further changes or adjustments to the jaw can be done; dental changes or “Dental Camouflage” can be made, in almost any case.
Can I get braces at age 30?
Yes, you can! Young or old, people of all ages can benefit from orthodontic treatment, as stated by Dr. Shoaib Durrani. But in the later years of life (after 18 years of age), only corrective treatment related to the alignment of teeth (braces) can be done. Because once the bones have fully developed, it gets challenging to manipulate them. Dental issues related to teeth should be treated at their earliest because neglecting dental treatments can cause more dental problems that may lead to more time-consuming and expensive treatment options.
Do braces change face shape?
As the braces align the teeth, they change the shape of the face, too, by correcting the jawline, upper and lower lip profiles as well as cheek prominence. For example, if the teeth were previously protruded or retruded, then moving them backward or forward will also positively affect the lips and the jawline giving a more beautiful facial profile. The facial shape is highly dependent on your teeth and jawbones; they may have a positive or a negative effect on the appearance of the face. Hence orthodontic treatments such as traditional braces change any unfavorable effects into an aesthetically pleasing facial appearance because we want you to smile with your head high!
How to clean your teeth with braces?
Maintaining oral hygiene is essential to living a high quality, healthy life and with braces on, it becomes more challenging to maintain the cleanliness of the oral cavity (teeth, tongue) and increases the risk of dental problems leading to dental cavities, calculus, etc. Braces add dental appliances in the mouth that hinder proper brushing.
But the advancement in technology has made unprecedented changes leading to better oral hygiene care even with braces on. It is recommended that you:
- Brush properly twice daily
- Floss daily
- Properly rinse with mouthwash and or/saltwater (check with your blood pressure, do not use salt if it is high)
- Avoid eating sticky & chewy food
Regardless of the type of braces, professional cleaning is also needed at least twice a year during the treatment (or as recommended by your orthodontist and dental hygienist). Not cleaning the oral cavity properly during and after orthodontic treatment can lead to many dental issues with weakened teeth. We do not want you to compromise on your dental health for the sake of a perfect smile, because what is a happy smile without healthy teeth?
