The best thing in the world is a child’s healthy smile!

A smiling child is a beacon of happiness in the world! These tiny tots need extra dental care because they are not independent to take care of themselves. Pedodontics; children’s dentistry helps the parent to assess and maintain a healthy oral environment for their children.

What happens if you don't brush your child's teeth?

Regular Brushing is essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle, which is equally necessary for both kids and adults. Children cannot brush their teeth on their own and parents need to assist them. Improper brushing of your child’s teeth can lead to many dental problems such as; tooth decay (dental cavities), infection of teeth or soft tissues (gums, lips, tongue), lousy smell/halitosis. These dental problems can adversely affect the overall general health of your child and seeing them in discomfort is painful for the parents too. Hence, it is mandatory to make your child brush their teeth properly, help, and assist them. Take them for regular dental checkups for a Paedodontic checkup at the dental clinic.

Are baby teeth more prone to decay?

A child’s smile is an antidote to melt your stress away; hence you cannot put them at risk of dental problems, as they are dependant on their parents and adults for everything and are prone to injuries if they are not looked after well. Similarly, if a child’s oral care is neglected, it can make their teeth more prone to decay because;

  • Children tend to eat more sweets and candies frequently and cannot rinse their mouths themselves.
  • Children cannot brush their teeth without proper guidance and assistance from the elders.
  • A bottle-fed child is more prone to dental decay (nursing bottle syndrome) if sugar is added to the milk.
  • The teeth of children are more sensitive as compared to an adult, as they have a thinner outer layer (enamel).

Make sure to brush your child’s teeth and avoid giving them sugary food. If any dental problem occurs, visit a dental clinic without delay. We at Durrani’s Dental Clinic frequently counsel and make the parents aware of their child’s oral health; Dr. Shoaib Durrani makes sure to satisfy all the parents and end their fears; call us at +92-21-37227441 to book an appointment with us.

How do I brush my seven-month old's teeth?

Parents can brush their infant’s teeth with finger silicone brushes or a clean dampened cloth/wipe after every meal and before bedtime. The tiniest possible amount (even smaller than a rice-grain) of fluoride toothpaste is usually recommended by the pediatric dentist (pedodontics). Even from birth, when the baby has no teeth, their mouths should be thoroughly cleaned with a clean wet cloth or wipes to ensure a healthy oral environment.

At what age should my child see a dentist?

It is best to visit a dentist with your child as soon as the first tooth erupts, which can be as early as six months (usually between 6- 14 months of age). Visiting a dentist will help the parents to maintain their child’s oral health because many parents, especially first-time parents, are unaware of the importance of preserving their baby’s dental hygiene, which can put the baby at risk of many dental problems.

What causes weak teeth in toddlers?

Toddlers can be tough to handle sometimes, especially when it comes to cleaning and maintaining their oral health; they can be uncooperative and may not even open their mouths, leading to weak teeth and compromised oral health.  But there are other reasons for weak teeth in toddlers, as follows;

  • Improper cleaning of the oral cavity.
  • Weak enamel.
  • Poor dietary habits.
  • Premature birth.
  • Genetics.
  • The bad dental hygiene of the mother while being pregnant with the baby.

If you notice any dental problems or weak teeth in your toddler, rush to the dental clinic without further delay.

What happens if a toddler has a cavity?

Tooth decay (cavity) can prove to be a parent’s worst nightmare. Having a cavity causes pain to the toddler and if infection occurs, fever can develop too, which can also lead to compromised health due to not eating properly and the parents suffer as much as their baby does, or even more. As soon as you notice a black spot or a minor cavity in your toddler’s mouth, do not neglect it. Visit a dentist and resolve your toddler’s dental problems.

The teeth of a toddler are milk teeth (temporary), but if caries (cavity) spreads and is left untreated, they can harm the underlying permanent tooth buds too, due to a persistent infection.

A pediatric dentist can give you multiple treatment options depending on the size and depth of the cavity plus your toddler’s cooperation and compliance.  Maintain your baby’s oral hygiene and take them regularly for dental checkups, even if there are no cavities or dental problems so that they feel comfortable going to their dentist when the need arises.
